The Right to Food

Food
By Niall Carty, Garbally College

There’s plenty of food in the world today
So much we tend to throw much of it away
Ireland is by far the worst for this
And all the food we do not seem to miss
Unlike some countries in the south
Where hunger and poverty runs throughout.

Food for Thought
By Matthew Tumulty, Garbally College

When you go home tonight
And take the weight off your feet
To your succulent, sumptuous supper
Spare a thought for those who have no food
For those who do not know
The aroma of a medium rare steak
Who only imagine the taste of a cooked dinner?
Who dream of the smell of a fry in the morning
Those who have no home
And only know hunger
Spare a little deliberation.

Food
By Michael Goode, Garbally College

There is enough
More than enough.
One and a half times enough
But why do eight hundred million
Still not have enough?
Global corruption means they don’t have enough
When will the millions finally have had enough?

Like vultures feeding on a dead carcass in the desert
You prey on me.

There is no Escape
By Michelle Holland and Roisin Brennan, Coláiste Mhuire, Johnstown, Kilkenny

Hello there.
My name is Allat.
Last night for supper
I ate an innocent rat.

This morning I imagined
I was in a beauty pageant
But it was just another illusion,
Well, that’s my foregone conclusion.

This lunchtime I ate
Three blind mice,
Who tasted really nice,
For the lubricious price.

Now for this supper
I thought things would change,
But still it seems to be the same
Old situations, that being stuck in a cage

Please someone throw me a lifeline
My time is slowly passing
And I’m sitting here wondering
How long I will be lasting

There is enough
But how to get it is the question.
Twenty-five thousand people die every day
While we throw food away
Which another person would gladly eat.
Where is the logic?

Food
By Joseph Cogavin, Garbally College

Every year six million children die
Does this figure make us cry?
What’s the reason for their death
The answer is not what we expect.
The problem is their lack of food.
And that the western world can be so crude
The fact is that one third of children under five
Are malnourished – worldwide.
