Voice Our Concern
2007-2008
Amnesty International's Human Rights Education Programme for Second Level Students
Voice Our Concern is an exciting human rights education initiative from Amnesty International, bringing together transition year and other second level students, teachers and leading Irish artists in the creative expression of human rights concerns. On 10th December every year (International Human Rights Day), Voice Our Concern brings together artists with schools and other educational institutions around Ireland to collaborate on using art forms to explore human rights issues of concern to young people. The artwork created from these collaborations is brought to a wider audience through screenings, exhibitions and publications.
Through Voice Our Concern, some of Ireland’s best-known artists have worked with students to create a dynamic body of plays, poetry, photography and film, which have explored human rights issues of concern to young people. The plays have been performed all over the country and have been published by Amnesty in a human rights education module. The poetry has feature in poetry readings at Voice Our Concern events. Films made by participating students have been compiled into an attractive film and photography workbook.
Music will be the medium used for the next stage of the project in 2007-2008. Transition year and other students in successful schools will work with a range of professional musicians, on a variety of issues. Themes suggested by students in the past have included conflict, domestic violence, alcoholism, the prison system and the right to travel.
